Assam Railway police on Monday recovered a powerful improvised explosive device in a bag from inside a coach of the Guwahati-bound Alipurduar-Kamakhya Intercity Express.

The IED, packed with five-and-a-half kilograms of TNT, was defused near Kendukona in lower Assam’s Kamrup district.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is due at the State for a two-day visit on November 29.

Rounak Ali Hazarika, Superintendent of Police, Government Railway Police Zone, told The Hindu that the IED was powerful enough to blow up the passenger train and inflict heavy injuries to its passengers.
