At least seven people were killed and 21 injured in a devastating fire following the explosion of a boiler at the Dudhsagar dairy in Mehsana, one of the largest co-operative dairies in Gujarat, on Saturday afternoon.

Critically injured

The injured have been admitted in different hospitals and while the more critically injured have been rushed to hospitals in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

Hospital sources said the condition of four persons was critical considering that they were feared to have received more than 90 per cent burns.

Fire tenders from Mehsana, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and several other nearby towns rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after battling it for over five hours.

Precautions

The district authorities said the boiler burst when a leaking gas pipeline was being repaired. Precautions are being taken to ensure that an ammonia storage tank nearby does not get affected by the fire and develop leakages.

No disruption

The dairy sources, however, said the accident would not cause any disruption in the supply of milk at the normal level on Sunday morning.

The Dudhsagar dairy is one of the licensee producers of the famous “Amul” brand of milk and milk products marketed by the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation.
