Legalised border trade at Moreh between India and Myanmar is paralysed and Chandel district and some parts of Thoubal district are cut off following two sets of blockades imposed from Friday. Muslim villagers at Sora in Thoubal district imposed the blockade from Friday morning with men and women squatting along highway 2 demanding arrest of the gunmen who had killed a 12 years old student and injured two adults on Thursday night. These gunmen were abducting a 65 years old man. They reportedly opened fire when the villagers tried to rescue him.
There was no vehicular movement along the highway on Friday. Traders could not proceed to Moreh while those who were stranded at various places on their way back to Imphal took a detour by skirting Sora and highway 2. Since the gunmen are still at large the blockade shall continue.
Meanwhile various students' and civil organisations imposed an indefinite blockade in Chandel district from Friday midnight. This is in protest against the suspension of 170 primary teachers in schools run by the Autonomous District Council, Chandel. An official of the education department found irregularities in the appointments of some teachers. Besides many others are at their homes or other places while proxy teachers were found teaching the students. But the organisations imposing the blockade said that no show cause notice was served on the 170 teachers and are demanding revocation of the suspension orders.
