Blockade in Assam cuts off Manipur, Nagaland

Manipur and Nagaland remain cut off from the rest of the country as the national highway linking these two mountain states is blockaded by the angry people at Karbi Along district of Assam. They are protesting against the attacks by some villagers in Nagaland. Several hundreds of trucks, buses and private vehicles bound for these two states are stranded. Besides, other vehicles are not leaving these two states for going elsewhere in the Northeast. This has caused inconvenience to the sick persons, candidates who are going to appear examinations and interviews as well as traders.

On Saturday night nine houses at Dimapur, Nagaland bordering Karbi Along were torched by miscreants. Police suspect that some timber merchants may be behind the fresh confrontations. In the past too there had been clashes among the villagers along the boundary of these two states. The bone of contention has been the possession of vast land rich with forest products. There were several rounds of talks at the levels of the Chief Ministers and high officials. But there has been no lasting solution.

Police and paramilitary forces have beefed up the security measures along the trouble prone areas of the two states since fresh clashes are not ruled out.
