The BJP put up an impressive show in the by-elections for 37 seats in various municipalities in Gujarat, while the party shared honours with the Congress in the by-elections for the panchayat bodies.

The by-elections for 79 seats in various districts and taluka panchayats and municipalities were held on Sunday.

The BJP claimed 25 of the 37 seats in the municipalities leaving only four for the Congress while independents bagged eight seats.

The Congress, however, fared well capturing five of the nine seats in the district panchayats and 14 of the 33 seats in the taluka panchayats. The BJP won four seats in the district panchayats and 17 in the taluka panchayats with two seats going to the independents.
