The surprise nomination of Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Gopal Narayan Singh for the Rajya Sabha seat from Bihar has baffled many political parties and leaders in the State with the ruling Janata Dal (United) on Tuesday alleging that he has 28 serious criminal cases pending against him.

Mr. Singh, who filed his nomination papers, though, said all the cases were “politically motivated.”

While releasing the list of cases, chief spokesperson of the JD(U), Sanjay Singh, said, “This shows the real character of the BJP…like everyone I’m also amazed how could a leader who had lost Assembly elections too for a number of times be nominated for the Rajya Sabha seat where leaders of integrity and intellectuals generally sit?”

“BJP has so many able leaders but why the party chose to send a leader like Mr Gopal Narayan Singh to Rajya Sabha only shows its chal, charitra and chehra [ways, characters and face].”

Mr. Singh also owns Narayan Medical College and Hospital in Sasaram. He had lost the last Assembly election from Nabinagar (Aurangabad) constituency.

However, reacting over JD(U)’s charge the former BJP State president and party candidate for the Rajya Sabha said, “everyone knows the character of JD(U) …all the cases against me are politically motivated.”

Sushil Kumar Modi was the frontrunner for the RS seat but the party sprang a surprise at last minute by nominating Mr. Singh for the seat. “I’m a more senior leader of the party than Sushil Modi…my nomination for the RS seat was due for a long time”, Mr. Singh said.

Meanwhile, Sushil Modi on Tuesday said that the party has taken right decision by nominating Mr. Singh for the Rajya Sabha seat. “I’d like to congratulate all the parties for nominating their candidates who will be elected unanimously.”
