Gujarat Police arrested Jayesh Darji, secretary of the Banaskantha district youth BJP, in connection with the attack on Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s SUV on Friday. Mr Gandhi’s car was hit with a stone that smashed the rear seat windows and injured an SPG guard while the Congress Vice President sitting in the front seat escaped unhurt.
“We have arrested Jayesh Darji, who is the main accused in the case,” Banaskantha Superintendent of Police (SP) Neeraj Badgujar told The Hindu .
Meanwhile, following the incident that was widely condemned by all political parties, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who initially accused Mr. Gandhi of using Gujarat floods as photo opportunity, also condemned the incident and ordered an inquiry.
The Rupani administration appointed Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Mohan Jha to conduct the inquiry into the incident that exposed a major security lapse during the Congress leader’s visit to meet the flood-affected people in a North Gujarat district.
