Despite Trinamool Congress chairperson and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of indulging in communal politics, the former BJP president Nitin Gadkari has hinted at the party having an open mind on a post-poll alliance with the ruling party in the State.

“If any party wants to join the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) after we gain majority, then our response will be positive,” he told journalists.

In a veiled dig at the advocates of a non-Congress, non-BJP third alternative or the federal front mooted by Ms. Banerjee, he claimed that regional and State parties did not have any “relevance in national politics.”

“The polarisation [of votes] is between the Congress and the BJP.”
