A Bharatiya Janata Party MP escaped unhurt in an attack while another party functionary was found murdered in two separate incidents in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday night.

Fatehpur MP Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti was attending a private function in her constituency when some persons allegedly started abusing her and opened fire from a country-made pistol. She escaped unhurt. Late in the night, a complaint was lodged by her supporters.

A police spokesman said here that the attack was the fallout of a dispute between the MP and some persons who campaigned for her in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, in another incident, the blood-stained body of a BJP functionary, Rakesh Rastogi, from Kichha in Uttarakhand, was found in a car on the Nainital Highway in Bareilly district on Sunday morning. Mr. Rastogi was an architect by profession. His body bore several stab wounds, his arms were tied behind and was strangulated, police said.

Investigations revealed that Mr. Rastogi left his office at Kichha around 11 a.m. on Friday with two unknown persons. He is said to have answered a call from a family member around 1 p.m. Thereafter, his mobile was switched off, a police spokesman said. Mr. Rastogi’s body was found in a car on the Nainital Highway around 8 a.m. on Sunday. He is suspected to have been killed late on Saturday night.

Police said prima facie it appears that Mr. Rastogi was killed elsewhere and his body abandoned on the highway in Bareilly district.
