All the 21 BJP MLAs in the 82-member Jharkhand Assembly on Wednesday resigned to press for early elections in the State which is under President’s Rule since January.
The BJP MLAs submitted their resignation letters to the Speaker Alamgir Alam, Assembly sources said.
An MLA from the Anglo-Indian community who was nominated by the then ruling BJP-led NDA alliance, also resigned.
The BJP, which had won 30 seats in the 2005 elections, has been now reduced to 21 following resignations, disqualifications and defeat in an Assembly by-poll.
The strength of the House came down to 42 after the resignation of the BJP MLAs.
President’s rule was imposed in Jharkhand on January 19 after JMM president Shibu Soren quit as Chief Minister after he was defeated in the Tamar Assembly by-poll which he had contested to enter the Assembly.
The term of the House expires in March next year.
