Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Sunday alleged that the BJP may plan large-scale communal violence in Uttar Pradesh for “political gains,” and claimed that “there is an intelligence input in this regard.”
However, “the State government is vigilant and will not allow anyone to disturb communal harmony,” Mr. Singh said, while addressing a series of election meetings in favour of party candidate Tej Pratap Yadav for the Mainpuri Lok Sabha by-poll. He alleged that the BJP, which had succeeded in forming the government at the Centre, had failed to fulfil its promises and achchey din [good days] remained elusive. “It has failed to check inflation, corruption and to protect the boundaries of our country. Pakistan has intruded in our territory several times, but the government could not check it effectively.” Justifying his decision to vacate the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat, the SP leader, who also won from Azamgarh, said it was done under political compulsions.
