BJP functionary shot dead in Muzaffarnagar

Omvir Singh, vice-president of the Muzaffarnagar panchayat cell of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was shot dead by two unidentified persons on Tuesday. Mr. Singh, an ex-serviceman, is the second BJP leader to be killed in the past four days in the State. On Saturday, >Vijay Pandit was gunned down by four motorcycle-borne assailants at Dadri in Gautam Buddha Nagar district.

Inspector-General of Police (Law and Order) Amrendra Kumar Sengar said Mr. Singh was shot dead while riding his motorcycle near the Bhima canal bridge in the Meerpur police station limits around 7.30 a.m. He lived at Nagla Khoparh village in Meerpur.

The motive of the crime is not known, though the police suspect a property dispute. Nagla Khoparh is said to be tense, but under control. A strong police force has been deployed.
