Varanasi witnessed high drama on Sunday after an Election Commission team, led by central expenditure observer Srinivasan, raided the Bharatiya Janata Party’s office here only to later return the 2,000 T-shirts, 5,000 pamphlets and badges it had seized.

Special observer Praveen Kumar claimed that the confiscated material was not meant for distribution on polling day.

An angry BJP staged a protest against the EC and claimed the raid was part of a conspiracy against its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
