The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Sunday accused both the Congress and the BJP of trying to deceive the people of Assam by making false poll promises.
Addressing a press conference here, AGP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta alleged that there was no difference between the Congress and the BJP and both had hatched conspiracies to bifurcate Assam for their political gains.
He said manifestos of both the Congress and the BJP had exposed their real character. Mr. Mahanta alleged that while the Congress ignored Assam’s issues, the BJP’s national manifesto had not included many promises made through the local media in Assam.
Mr. Mahanta and AGP working president Atul Bora alleged that MPs of both the BJP and the Congress remained silent in Parliament though the State leaders of the two parties made hue and cry over the burning issue of Assam.
Responding to a question, the AGP president said electoral alliance with the BJP in 2009 had adversely affected the regional party as many AGP supporters shifted their loyalties to the BJP. However, the AGP had been able to strengthen the party organisation in this election and regain the lost support base, Mr. Mahanta said.
