Biman Bandopadhyay files papers for Speaker’s post

Biman Bandopadhyay on Thursday filed his nomination as the Trinamool Congress candidate for the Speaker’s post in the newly-constituted West Bengal Assembly.

Assembly secretary J.L. Chakraborty said that the Speaker’s election would be held on May 30 when the new House meets for the day.

Mr. Bandopadhyay’s election to the Speaker’s post is a certainty as there is no other contender.

Trinamool Congress has 184 members in the 294-member House. Its ally Congress has 42 members.

Party sources said that Mr. Bandopadhyay, elected for the first time in the assembly from Baruipur (West) constituency, resigned from the post of Trinamool Congress disciplinary committee chairman before filing his nomination.

Trinamool Congress has recommended name of Sonali Guha for the post of Deputy speaker.
