Bihar Governor D Konwar on Saturday stressed the need for holding dialogue with Nepal for a comprehensive long-term solution to recurring floods in the state.

“A comprehensive plan is required to solve the problems related to floods which recur every rainy season causing heavy damage to properties and standing crops, besides miseries to lakhs of people,” Mr. Konwar said after an aerial survey of flood-hit districts of Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur and Madhubani.

But a “fruitful talk” with Nepal on the issue was not possible now in the wake of political instability in that country.

Mr. Konwar, who took the details damages wrecked by the flood in north Bihar districts from the authorities, said he would send a report to the Centre on the situation.

Steps must be taken for constructing platforms in the flood-prone districts for sheltering people and cattle at the time of floods, he said.

“However, since the floods recur every monsoon, people should strive to face the problem on their own instead of waiting for support,” the governor said.
