Bengal neglected in rail budget: resolution

July 11, 2014 01:13 pm | Updated April 22, 2016 12:36 am IST - KOLKATA:

The Assembly unanimously passed a resolution here on Thursday stating that the State has been neglected in the Railway Budget.

“There was no substantial proposal for Bengal and no allotment of funds for ongoing projects in the State,” the resolution tabled by Parliamentary Minister Partha Chatterjee said.

The resolution was supported by the all the parties, including the Left parties, Congress, and the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist).

Speaking to journalists later in the day, Mr. Chatterjee said on the one hand there has been no substantial allocation for West Bengal and on the other hand, the increase in freight would result in rise of prices of essential commodities.

The Minister criticised the proposal to introduce foreign direct investment in Railways and demanded that the Centre withdraw it.

Mr. Chatterjee said the Trinamool Congress has not only opposed the Railway Budget, but also hit the streets on the issue.
