Prison officials at the Tripura central jail on Sunday said they would conduct probe into the death of a Bangladeshi undertrial, who died on Friday of injuries suffered during a physical assault by some convicts.

Karim Mia, who was arrested in Khowai in west Tripura, died on Friday night, nine days after he was admitted to the G.B. Panth Hospital in Agartala. “We will constitute an enquiry as he was in judicial custody. We have also to submit report to the court,” a prison official said.

Mia was arrested on the charge of theft and for illegally trespassing into the country. The prison official said the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata had been informed of Mia’s death.
