A day-long bandh hit transport services and businesses here on Friday after various political and social groups called for a strike over a move to locate an All India Institute of Medical Sciences in the Kashmir Valley instead of here as proposed earlier.
The bandh, called by the Jammu Chambers of Commerce and Industry, was supported by political, social, transport and trade organisations.
As transport vehicles remained off the road, passengers who arrived on trains were stranded. Shops and other business establishments and some educational institutions remained closed. The bandh was peaceful.
“So far, the situation continues to be normal as the bandh evokes a total response in the region,” a police official said.
Nixed response
Businesses in some parts of the city functioned as usual. In Samba, Kathua and Udhampur districts, the bandh call evoked a mixed response with no effect on businesses.
Friday being the last working day of the Civil Secretariat in Jammu before the offices move to the summer capital of Srinagar, there was a thin attendance in offices across the Jammu region.
Several political parties, including the Opposition National Conference, the Congress, the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party, the Nationalist Congress Party, the Kranti Dal and the Bajrang Dal have extended support for the bandh.
The Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association Jammu was another supporter. -PTI
