Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin on Monday batted for the Congress in the Valley and addressed voters in Anantnag constituency, which fell vacant upon demise of the former Chief Minister, Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, in January.

“There is need to strengthen the secular forces in the State as their vote to Congress candidate shall be a vote to secularism, unity, harmony and togetherness in the State,” said Mr. Azharuddin. Claiming the Congress “never compromised on its stated position of safeguarding the multi-cultural identity, unity, harmony and togetherness in the country”, he said the party was fully capable of defeating the forces and factors vitiating atmosphere of tranquillity for personal benefit.

The by-polls for Anantnag seat is scheduled for June 22.
