Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee has triggered a controversy, saying Trinamool workers would break the hands of Communist Party of India (Marxist) cadres if Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is ever attacked again. He threatened to tonsure the heads of Leader of the Opposition Surya Kanta Mishra and CPI(M) State secretary Biman Bose.
Senior Congress leaders — Pradesh Congress Committee president Pradip Bhattacharya and Minister of State for Railways Adhir Chowdhury — were also not spared.
Speaking at a rally at Konnagar in Hooghly district on Sunday evening to protest against the demonstration against Ms. Banerjee by Students’ Federation of India (SFI) activists outside the Yojana Bhavan in New Delhi, Mr. Banerjee said: “If a hand is ever raised against Mamata Banerjee again, we shall break your hands.”
The remark comes in the wake of violence that rocked the State hours after the New Delhi demonstration and the heckling of Finance Minister Amit Mitra. According to the Left Front, more than 1,000 party offices and offices of affiliated organisations were attacked and ransacked by the Trinamool.
