Assam’s 14-year-old brave girl >Gunjan Sarma , the class VIII student who volunteered to be taken hostage by a gunman to save the lives of 10 school children on December 4 in Sivasagar district, sustained injuries in an accident on National Highway 37 near Hatikhuli, Bokakhat, in Golaghat district in the early hours on Wednesday.

Five other members of her family, including her parents, brother and sisters, also sustained injuries in the accident which occurred when the vehicle in which they were travelling from their residence in Nazira of Sivasagar district to Guwahati, lost control and fell in a ditch along the highway. All of them were admitted to the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital.

Gunjan, accompanied by family members, was on her way to Guwahati to receive the bravery award which the State government instituted in her name to acknowledge her act.

The award function was scheduled to be held at 4 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi visited the hospital to inquire about the health condition of Gunjan and her family members, and announced that the State government would bear the entire cost of treatment of the brave girl and, if required, arrange for better treatment outside the State.
