Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should complete his term and backed the idea that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi should be projected as the prime ministerial candidate after the completion of the full term by Dr. Singh.

Mr. Gogoi stated this during his interaction with journalists at his official residence here on Wednesday while referring to media speculation whether or not Dr. Singh would complete his full term.

Mr. Gogoi announced that the State government would implement its version of the Central Lokpal bill within February.

His government would include all provisions contained in the Central legislation.

He, however, said mere implementation of the Lokpal legislation was not enough and the system should be changed to curb corruption.

Rural economy

Mr. Gogoi said in the new year, his government would stress on further improvement of the rural economy by creating employment avenues in the agriculture and horticultural sectors, and skill development of the rural youth.

The government would set up rural haats for farmers to facilitate the sale of their produces at remunerative prices.

Success stories of individuals in rural Assam enhancing their income through modern agricultural practices and through entrepreneurship were increasing which indicated that a revolutionary change had been taking place in the State in the field of agriculture, horticulture, pisciculture and other sectors.
