Continued operation by the Assam police against the militant outfit, United People’s Liberation Army, has led to the seizure of more arsenal of the outfit and also the service pistol of the slain Hamren Superintendent of Police Nityananda Goswami and the AK-47 rifle of his slain Personal Security Officer (PSO) Ratul Nunisa. The recovered weapons include a Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) with ten rounds of ammunition.

Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) A.P. Rout told The Hindu that on being led by the arrested UPLA cadre the police recovered a huge cache of arms kept buried in Longmili hillock of Ulukunchi police outpost under Boithalangso police station in Karbi Anglong hill district. The recovered weapons and ammunition included six AK-47 with 30 magazines (including the AK-47 belonging to the slain PSO), 400 rounds of ammunition and the 9mm pistol of the SP.

On Monday night, the Assam police arrested ten UPLA militants, including three top leaders of the outfit and six cadre involved in the encounter last week. The police also recovered a huge cache of arms from their possession.

Describing the ongoing counter-insurgency operations against the UPLA to be the most successful operation by a police force, the ADGP said UBGL was much more sophisticated than a rocket launcher or mortar.
