Controversial godman Asaram Bapu, who faces rape and sexual harassment cases in Gujarat and Rajasthan, has now been named in an assault and attempt to murder case.

The case relates to an alleged assault on one Raju Chandak in 2009 after the latter testified against the self-styled godman before a judicial commission in Gujarat. In the charge sheet, the police have named Asaram, currently lodged in a jail in Rajasthan, as key accused, along with Kartik Haldar and Sanju Malegaon, who allegedly fired at Chandak.

According to the charge sheet, Asaram and others had hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Chandak for “creating problems” for the godman. Asaram was first arrested in 2013 in a rape and sexual harassment case.
