Aruna Shanbaug, a former nurse at Mumbai’s KEM hospital, who has been lying in a vegetative state in the hospital for the last 40 years, has been moved to Medical Intensive Care Unit.

Ms. Shanbaug was suffering from pneumonia and faced difficulty in breathing. “She has responded very well to the antibiotics and is stable at present,” Dr. Shubhangi Parkar, acting dean of KEM hospital told The Hindu .

Ms. Shanbaug was raped and beaten up by a sweeper in 1973. She was choked with a chain by Sohanlal Walmiki, before sexually assaulting her. She suffered asphyxiation, which damaged her brain. Nurses at the hospital have been taking care of her for the last 40 years.
