In yet another incident of sexual assault in West Bengal, a teenager was gang-raped outside the Rampurhat railway station in Birbhum district in the early hours of Saturday.
A little later, her friend was also molested on the station premises. However, the police arrived and rescued her. A youth was arrested.
After a search, the police found the gang rape victim on a nearby field.
It is said the girl, a resident of Dumka district in Jharkhand, had been waiting at the station with her friend. As she came out of the waiting room to fetch water, a group of miscreants dragged her to the nearby field and raped her.
When the other girl came out looking her, she was molested. Soon a police patrol van arrived at the spot and rescued her. Motin Sheikh, a youth, was arrested on the charge of molestation. A search is on for the gang which committed the gang rape.
“Both teenage girls are under our custody. We have informed their families. They will be handed over when their family members arrive,” Superintendent of Police Hrishikesh Meena told The Hindu over telephone.
According to the police, both girls were returning home after a social in Bardhaman district on Friday night. As they could not find any transport, they decided to take shelter at the railway station for the night.
Last week, a hearing and speech-impaired athlete was raped, on her way back home, by an autorickshaw driver in Uttar Dinajpur district.
Ever since the rape of a 37-year-old mother of two was reported in Kolkata on February 6, certain other incidents have also occurred, raising questions about the safety of women in the State.
