The West Bengal government has “decided in principle” to recognise around 10,000 madrasas. However, financial assistance would not be offered given the grim fiscal situation in the State, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said here on Friday.

Describing it as a “revolutionary decision,” the Chief Minister said recognition would enable these madrasas to avail themselves of various Central schemes, some of which would benefit them financially as well.

As we are presently not being able to provide them the assistance because of financial problems, we will be granting them recognition so that they can avail themselves of the various Central schemes madrasas are entitled to.”
