Army launches operation against militants in Kashmir

A major operation against hiding militants is underway in a forest range in north Kashmir’s Handwara area in Kupwara district. One Army man is believed to have died in the ongoing operation.

Preliminary reports suggest that the Army started a combing operation on Tuesday night in Rajwar forests falling in Bawan-Watsar area, more than 70 km away from Srinagar.

A police official confirmed to The Hindu that there was an exchange of fire between the militants and the security forces on Tuesday night.

One Army personnel was killed. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the soldier fell into a gorge near the encounter site. The army is yet to officially confirm any casualty as the operation is still on.
