A group of nearly 50 Army jawans allegedly vandalised a police station in Nashik district and beat up police personnel, among them a woman officer.
Sources said the attack was a “reprisal” for the filing of a first information report against an Army officer for “obstructing a government servant on duty” at the Upnagar police station after he had a run-in with a police officer. The Army officer was allegedly detained for a night and then released.
“It is most unfortunate. A meeting among senior Army officers is on to ascertain what prompted this violent backlash. We have taken 12 suspects into police custody,” said Commissioner of Police, Nashik, Kulwant Kumar Sarangal.
The jawans in civilian clothes came on motorbikes to the station and allegedly went on a rampage for more than half an hour, damaging computers, furniture and vehicles. Namrata Desai, woman inspector in-charge, was locked in her cabin. Several policemen have been admitted to a local hospital.
At least three of them were badly injured, hospital sources said.
