Two civilians were killed and two others critically injured in Budgam’s Chattargam area when Army men opened fire on the vehicle they were travelling in on Monday.

“Two of them are dead and two are critical. They were civilians and none of them had any guns on them. We have registered an FIR under Section 302 against the Army and are going to take strict action,” IG Abdul Gani Mir told The Hindu .

According to the police, all the victims were in their twenties.

The incident took place around 5.20 p.m. when the soldiers opened fire on a white car bearing a Srinagar registration number. The Army claimed that the occupants of the car did not stop when ordered to at a checkpoint. Soon after incident, the Army issued a statement that two of its men were killed and two others injured when militants opened fire. But it later changed its version.

“We are getting many versions of the story from our soldiers and the police and we are not clear about what happened. As soon as we get a clear picture we will come out with a statement,” Army spokesperson Col. N.N. Joshi told The Hindu .
