New Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Nabam Tuki on Tuesday apologised to the State people for the “inconvenience caused by political instability.”
Mr. Tuki, a four-time Congress legislator, replaces Jarbom Gamlin, after a nearly three-month-long leadership tussle within the party.
He announced after the swearing-in ceremony that alongside restoration of law and order, his priority would be the development of the State and implementation of the Central government package for the State on time.
Inclusive governance
He promised “inclusive governance” through participation of every community, leader and citizen in the development and welfare initiatives.
“I am aware that the mood of the people at the moment, owing to political undercurrent, is pensive. So many things have happened so fast in the past months that the very trust of the people in government and governance has been shaken very badly. I humbly apologise to the people of the State for the inconvenience caused by political instability,” said the 47-year-old Chief Minister.
Violent clashes
The State had witnessed violent clashes among the supporters of the two camps of the Congress — one favouring continuance of Mr. Gamlin as the Chief Minister and the other seeking takeover by Mr. Tuki.
Born at Ompuli village under the Sagalee Assembly constituency of Papumpare district, which he represents, Mr. Tuki began his career as a student leader.
He was the president of the Arunachal Pradesh unit of the NSUI from 1983 to 1986. He became the working president of the North Eastern Youth Congress Coordination Committee from 1993 to 1995.
He was elevated to the position of general secretary, Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) from 1995 to 1996 as he rose up the ladder of his political career.
From 2004 to 2008, he held the post of working president, APCC, and was elected APCC president in 2008, which he is still holding.
Mr. Tuki was first elected to the Assembly from the 15-Sagalee constituency in 1995 and became a Deputy Minister, Agriculture, the same year.
He assured the people that his government would respect all issue-based agitations by different organisations and would intervene to sort it out by taking the organisation concerned into confidence.
