The body of 23-year-old student Anuj Bidve, who was killed in Salford in Manchester on Boxing Day, was handed over to the Indian High Commission on Tuesday.
Anuj's brother-in-law, Rakesh Sonawane, said the family would try to leave India on Wednesday.
They are expected get the custody of the body the next day.
A second post-mortem was conducted on Tuesday.
The Greater Manchester police visited the Bidves on Tuesday evening for the second time.
Allaying apprehensions over the delay in repatriating the body, Chief Superintendent Russ Jackson said the police had explained to the family the legal process in the U.K., which necessitated a second post-mortem, as right of the defence.
“After the second post-mortem, Her Majesty's Coroner will be able to consider release of the body. Anuj's family is aware of this and the detailed reasoning behind it,” he said.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mr. Jackson said that at the meeting on Monday night the police were able to “fill in some gaps in the understanding of the events leading up to Anuj's tragic death.”
