Anganwadi workers throw hot rice water on a child in Odisha

May 12, 2014 03:18 pm | Updated October 18, 2016 02:47 pm IST - BHUBANESWR:

A two-and-half-year-old tribal boy sustained critical burn injuries when two Anganwadi workers threw hot rice water on him in Odisha’s Keonjhar district.

The toddler’s only fault was that he accidentally touched a container full of boiled eggs. The incident took place in Khendura village under Jhumpura police limit.

“My son was playing in an Anganwadi centre when he inadvertently touched the container. Anganwadi workers said no other kids would consume eggs after my son touched it and in a fit of anger, threw hot rice water on him,” Rilu Munda, father of the injured child, told a private TV channel.

The boy, who sustained about 25 to 30 per cent burn injuries, was rushed to hospital and is now out of danger, said Keonjhar Sub-Collector.

Anganwadi worker Subhashree Giri and cook Subrati Nayak were arrested. As the boy is a tribal, a police officer of the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police will take charge of the investigation.
