The body of an anganwadi worker and her two daughters were discovered inside their house that was locked from inside, at Belakana village under Kalyansinghpur police station of Rayagada district in Odisha on Sunday.

A two-year-old granddaughter of the anganwadi worker was also found unconscious.

According to police sources, the deceased were identified as Utkala Shukla, anganwadi worker of Belakana, and her two married daughters, Pinky (38) and Rinki (26). The house had been locked since Saturday, making the localites suspicious, who then informed the police. The house was opened in the presence of police and the three bodies were found on a bed.

According to the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Rayagada, Y.Jagannath Rao, initial evidence hinted that the three women had consumed some poison. The bodies have been sent for autopsy.

Meanwhile, anganwadi workers’ association of the area alleged that Utkala was being troubled by the local ward member and helper of her anganwadi centre, which may have led to the suicides.

Although married, both her daughters used to stay with Utkala and she was the sole bread earner of the family. Anganwadi workers blocked road at Belakana for some time demanding legal action against the accused.
