Aligarh Muslim University authorities have decided to reschedule the varsity’s students’ union elections and restart the electoral process “at the earliest”, a university spokesman said on Friday.
A decision on this was taken at a special meeting of the University’s Executive Council.
The Aligarh Muslim University authorities had made it clear that they were not in a position to hold polls on the earlier scheduled date of September 27 as demanded by a section of the protesting students.
The students had staged a dharna in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence on Wednesday night demanding roll back of Vice-Chancellor Lt. Gen Zameer Uddin Shah’s decision to cancel the varsity’s students’ union election.
The university has decided that “criminal elements and expelled students” will not be allowed to enter the campus during this period, the spokesman said.
A five-member committee headed by Prof. Amanullah Khan, a senior member of the AMU faculty, has been constituted to monitor the electoral process and ensure a speedy conclusion on the issue. - PTI
