The AMU management today decided to hold all entrance examinations, including for its medical and engineering colleges, as per schedule despite the varsity closing doing indefinitely following student clashes.
“During a high-level meeting, senior officials of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) decided that despite the closure, all entrance examinations including those for professional courses will be held as per original schedule,” officials said here.
While the first entrance examination for class XI would be held on May 8, admission test for engineering college would be held on May 14 and for medical college on Mar 31, they said.
During the meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor P K Abdul Aziz, it was decided to reopen the university on the earliest possible date, university spokesman Rahat Abrar said.
“Deans and head of the departments have been asked to prepare an alternative schedule of examination so that the academic calendar is not totally disrupted. Special attention will be given for the classes of final year students whose career would suffer if examinations are delayed beyond a point,” he said.
Mr. Abrar, however, said that it has been decided not to provide hostel facilities to those internal students who would appear in different admission test.
Earlier, leaders of the AMU Students Union and office-bearers of Teachers Association held meetings with the V-C demanding immediate reopening of the university and a high-level probe into the cause of recent violence.
Meanwhile, eviction of students from hostels continued in a peaceful manner and officials claimed that more than 95 per cent of premises, which house nearly 20,000 students, have already been cleared.
The AMU was shut down indefinitely on Saturday following clashes between two groups of students that left 12 of them injured.
“The AMU has been closed sine die in the early hours of today following a faction feud between two groups,” AMU spokesman had said.
Meanwhile, secretary of AMU teachers’ association Mustafa Zaidi demanded immediate reopening of university and sacking of university officials responsible for the present crisis.
“If the Centre fails to take immediate action, the situation will deteriorate further,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Aligarh Muslim University Teacher’s Association (AMUTA) started an indefinite dharna in front of Aziz’s office demanding reopening of the University at the earliest.
“The V-C appears to be adamant and is no mood to reopen the University at an early date,” AMUTA secretary Mustafa Zaidi told reporters after a meeting with the V-C.
“The V-C is blaming a small group of mischief mongers for the Saturday’s violence. What is stopping him from taking action against such elements?” he questioned.
Police said that so far no FIR had been lodged by the university administration in connection with the violence.
“A report has been lodged by a particular group of students against rival faction,” Superintendent of Police Mansingh Chauhan said.
