Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh on Monday demanded that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati either resign, or apologise for an alleged conspiracy to malign him, his family members and associates.

The FIR lodged against him in the Babupurwa Police Station in Kanpur for an alleged financial fraud was politically motivated, he alleged and accused the Chief Minister of political vendetta.

Mr. Singh, who met Governor B.L. Joshi here on Monday, demanded an inquiry by Central agencies into the alleged conspiracy. He was merely a shareholder of the companies named in the FIR. The companies had complied with all legal requirements and even got the approval of the High Court, he said. He denied that any law was violated. An inquiry was conducted by the Company Law Board in 2008. He resigned from the board of directors ever since he took to full-time politics, he said.

In a memorandum submitted to the Governor, Mr. Singh alleged that Station House Officer of the Babupurwa Police Station Dinesh Tripathi was in regular contact with Ms. Mayawati, her Secretary, Navneet Sehgal, and other close aides of the Chief Minister. He claimed that Mr. Tripathi was posted to the police station one hour prior to the registration of the FIR on October 17. This was evident from the call details, (which were annexured with the memorandum).

In the memorandum, Mr. Singh accused Ms. Mayawati, Mr. Sehgal, Minister Babu Singh Kushwaha, Rajya Sabha member of the BSP Akhilesh Das and the ADG, Law and Order, Brij Lal, of foisting a false case against him. He alleged that complainant Shivakant Tripathi and the SHO were partners in an alleged land grabbing.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Singh rejected the charge of funds being siphoned off from the companies. He said clearance was obtained from the Income Tax Department as well as the Government of India.

He accused Ms. Mayawati of leading a political vendetta against him, SP president Mulayam Singh and actor Amitabh Bachchan which, he said, was evident from the cases filed on different matters.
