All the six candidates for the six Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal have been elected unopposed.

While the Trinamool Congress had nominated four candidates, the Congress and the Left Front had one nominee each.

Those who have been declared elected on Friday are Debabrata Bandhopadhyay, Derek O'Brien, Sukhendu Shekhar Roy and Srinjoy Bose of the Trinamool Congress, Sitaram Yechury of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Pradip Bhattacharya of the Congress.

The elections were necessitated with the terms of five Rajya Sabha MPs expiring in August and one seat falling vacant because of the death of a sitting MP.

Elections on July 22

The elections were slated for July 22 but since there was no contest for the seats, all the six candidates in the fray have been declared elected. Friday was the last date for the withdrawal of nominations.

The relevant certificates have been issued to all but Mr. Yechury who was not present on the day, an official of the West Bengal Assembly said.
