The Uttar Pradesh police on Sunday claimed to have cracked the Aligarh minor rape and murder case after arresting a middle-aged man, Somna alias Suman, of the Nagla Kher village under Bannadevi police station area. According to ADG (Law and Order) Arun Kumar, the accused confessed to his crime, committed allegedly while under the influence of liquor. The accused was known to the victim’s uncle, Dalchand, and had, on the day of the crime, consumed liquor with him, Mr. Kumar said.

However, the possible motive and police theory for the crime remain foggy.

Mr. Kumar said the accused went to the victim’s house on the intervening night of April 17 and 18, took her to a vacant plot, sexually assaulted her and then killed her.

The official said the accused was nabbed after an anonymous caller on Sunday informed the police that Suman was moving in a suspicious manner around the district hospital seeking treatment for injuries on the neck. Suman later admitted to his crime before a magistrate under Section 164 of Cr.PC, Mr. Kumar told reporters. His statement was videographed.

According to Mr. Kumar, Suman confessed that he had planned to abduct the girl’s father when he barged into his house late in the night, but, inebriated, kidnapped the girl instead. Asked what motive he had for kidnapping the girl’s father, Mr. Kumar only said the statement of the accused had been recorded.

Regarding the injuries on Suman’s neck, the ADG said: “Following the uproar over the incident, the accused was ridden with guilt and tried to commit suicide by slitting his throat. But as the suicide attempt was unsuccessful, he was moving around with a bed sheet wrapped around his neck for getting himself treated.”
