Akalis should sit on dharna in Delhi: Jakhar

June 25, 2018 01:45 am | Updated 01:45 am IST - Chandigarh

Ahead of the Shiromani Akali Dal’s proposed protest across Punjab on June 26 to build pressure on the Congress government to cut down on its share of taxes on petroleum products, the Punjab Congress on Sunday said the Akali Dal should instead go to New Delhi and stage a protest against the BJP-led Central government.

“Since the Congress came to power in Punjab, the State government has not increased VAT on petroleum products, while the BJP government at the Centre, in which the Akali Dal is a partner, has increased prices of oil several times in the last four years by way of increasing Central taxes,” said Sunil Jakhar, president of the Punjab Congress.

They must go to New Delhi to sit on “dharna” in front of the Central government instead of protesting in the State, he added.
