After Adarsh, Ashirwad society in the news

Raising questions on the conduct of senior politicians and bureaucrats, including the former Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, during allotment of land for the controversial Ashirwad society, social activist Y.P. Singh said on Saturday he would move court against the irregularities in the society which have already been highlighted in a leaked CAG [Comptroller and Auditor General] report.

“We will first have to approach some executive authorities, after which we will move the court,” Mr Singh, a former IPS officer, told a press conference here.

Mr. Singh alleged that retired IAS officer Chitkala Zutshi facilitated irregularities in the allotment of the land. He said that after the Adarsh Housing Society scam, the Ashirwad society scam was an addition to the list of societies with irregularities in land allotment. “Lot of such scams are yet to come out,” he said.

Ms. Zutshi has however, refuted reports that she owned a flat in the Ashirwad society.

Launching an attack on Maharashtra Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Harshawardhan Patil, Mr. Singh said: “His wife filed an affidavit stating that the monthly income of the family is Rs. 6,000.

But Mr. Harshawardhan's affidavit filed during the 2004 election states that his total assets were worth more than Rs. 1 crore. He alleged that Bhagyashri Harshawardhan Patil also gave a false declaration stating that neither she nor any of the family members had a flat in the limits of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation.

“Mr. Harshawardhan made his mother apply for the flat first. But since she showed the total monthly income as Rs. 26,000, her application was rejected as she did not fit into the criteria. In 2004, his mother's name was replaced by his wife's name for the allotment,” Mr. Singh said.
