The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Aam Aadmi Party government and the municipal corporations to issue advisories through various modes within next three days, ahead of Independence Day, to make the public aware of the fatal effects of manja coated with toxic chemicals and glass, which is fast replacing the traditional cotton string to fly kites.

A Bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal directed “the Office of the Divisional Commissioners/ Directorate of Information & Publicity and all the municipal corporations to issue advisories within three days from today [Thursday] through various modes to make the public aware of the fatal effects of the use of razor sharp thread/ manja made of nylon/plastic/synthetic using glass/metal and/or other toxic materials.”
It also directed that “steps be taken by the Commissioner of Delhi Police to ensure that advisories are issued by all authorities concerned in terms of the above direction so as to prevent any untoward incidents in Delhi.”
The court issued the directions on a Public Interest Litigation filed by Zulfiquar Hussain seeking a ban on Chinese manja in Delhi. Mr. Hussain’s counsel Tareeq Adeeb had said that Chinese manja had been the reason behind fatalities among birds, animals and humans.
