Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Wednesday remained tight-lipped over the fate of two bureaucrats linked to the Adarsh housing society scam.
Information Commissioner Ramanand Tiwari and Human Rights Commission member Subhash Lalla whose kin own flats in Adarsh have been asked to step down.
Asked to comment on the government's call for their resignations, Mr. Chavan neither confirmed nor denied the development. “To seek information, I asked them to meet the Chief Secretary. I will not comment beyond that,” he told journalists here.
When it was pointed out that an English daily had quoted him as saying that the officials have been asked to quit, Mr. Chavan denied it. “I have not asked them to resign.”
This is the second day in a row that the government has avoided commenting on the resignation matter, despite media reports. The previous day, Mr. Chavan refused to meet the press. On the other hand, Chief Secretary J.P. Dange, who initially said the officers had “declined to resign,” later refused comment and was unreachable.
The government is in the process of appointing a two-member panel for a judicial inquiry into the housing scam. “We will decide soon,” Mr. Chavan said.
