Underworld don, Abu Salem, who is lodged in Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai, was attacked by a fellow inmate late on Thursday.
A top police officer from Navi Mumbai police confirmed the attack.
According to initial reports, one Devendra Jagtap, who was arrested in advocate Shahid Azami murder case, fired at Salem at around 8.30 p.m. However, the bullet brushed past him and did not cause him any serious harm.
Salem was immediately rushed to the government hospital in Navi Mumbai. His condition is said to be stable.
