Veterans of Indian classical music will converge in Goa to participate in Pt Jitendra Abhishekhi Musical Festival to be held on September 12 and 13.

Pt Abhishekhi, a Goa-born nationally famed classical music genius, is hailed for single-handedly reviving the Marathi musical theatre in 1960s.

“The festival in Goa is not only for entertainment value but also to instill sense of classical music in younger generation and introduce them to various gharanas,” a spokesperson for the organisers told PTI on Saturday.

Goa Kala Academy has been holding the festival in honour of Pt Abhisheki since 1998 after his demise. Tarangini Pratishtan are the co-organisers.

The late classical vocalist was born at Mangueshi village in Goa and later settled in Mumbai.

“Initially for couple of years, there was not much response for the festival but later on it picked up tremendously,” Shaunak Abhisheki, Pt Abhisheki’s son, who is also taking part in the festival said.

Among those participating in the festival to be held at Kala Academy complex on the bank of River mandovi will be Pt Rajan and Pt Sajan Mishra, P t Ajay Pohankar, Sucheta Bhide Chafekar, Pt Kaivalyakumar Gurav, Pt Sanjeev Abhyankar, Uma Garg.
