The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Friday demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh give a clear commitment on time bound implementation of all the clauses of the Assam Accord in his Independence Day speech.
They also wanted United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi to clarify her position vis-à-vis the commitments given by late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on implementing the accord to solve the vexed foreigners' problem and to protect the indigenous people of Assam from being reduced to a minority.
“Missed opportunity”
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, said the solution to the vexed problem of infiltration in Assam should be legally tenable, socially acceptable and politically workable.
Speaking at the valedictory function of the two-day conclave on “Assam Accord-Looking Back to Look Ahead” focusing on Bangladeshi infiltration , Ms. Swaraj that past 25 years of signing of the Assam Accord has been “an era of missed opportunity.”
