AAP volunteers object to selection of candidate

Days after the Aam Aadmi Party announced the first list of candidates for the 2017 Punjab Assembly polls, some party volunteers on Thursday objected to the name of Ahbaab Singh Grewal as party’s Ludhiana (West) candidate, claiming he is not a “winnable candidate”.

Volunteers of the AAP from Ludhiana (West) Assembly constituency led by Dr D. S. Grewal and Amandeep Singh Bains expressed displeasure over the name of Mr. Grewal.

Mr. Grewal’s name figured in the AAP’s first list of 19 candidates for the Assembly polls in the State, slated for next year. “We wish to request AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal that Mr. Grewal, candidate from Ludhiana (West) Assembly seat, must be withdrawn in the interest of the party as he does not meet the core values of the AAP,” they said.

“Mr. Grewal lacks mass appeal and he is not a winnable candidate,” they said, asking Mr. Kejriwal to name some other candidate from the seat who is “better suited”. “Out of some 800 total AAP volunteers in Ludhiana (west) 90 per cent are against the candidacy of Mr. Grewal,” they claimed.

The volunteers said they had tried to raise their concern (about Mr. Grewal’s candidacy) with Punjab’s party affairs in-charge Sanjay Singh, but it turned futile.
