Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders on Tuesday defended Narela MLA Sharad Chauhan, who is in judicial custody in connection with the suicide case of a woman party worker, and blamed the Delhi Police for her death.

AAP leaders said that police’s inaction on Ms. Soni’s complaints of death threats led her to take such an extreme step.

Complaint against police

Addressing the media on Tuesday, vice-chairman of the Dialogue and Development Commission Ashish Khetan came armed with documents to back the party’s claim. One of the documents was a letter dated June 10 in which Ms. Soni had complained against the police.

“After AAP pressurised the police, they filed charges against the main accused Ramesh Bharadwaj. Sadly, the police was so lenient that Mr. Bharadwaj got bail,” Mr. Khetan said.

The AAP leader said that Ms. Soni had named ASI Mukhtiyar Singh in her complaint and demanded action.

“But he was merely removed from the case. Her shop was pelted with stones and she regularly received threatening calls,” added Mr. Khetan.

Another party leader, Sanjay Singh, claimed that the police’s remand application for Mr. Chauhan does not contain any of the allegations being raised.

“The police are on an arrest spree as Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants all AAP MLAs to be in jail. He is trying to weed out his political opponents by getting them arrested,” said Mr. Singh.

The AAP leaders are demanding action against all the cops named and involved in the case and cancellation of bail to Mr. Bharadwaj.

“There is no rule of law in Delhi. The only job of the police is to arrest AAP MLAs and defame the party,” said Mr Singh.
