Happy over being recognised as the third gender by the Supreme Court, as many as 230 trans-genders cast their votes here on Thursday.
The apex All Odisha Eunuch Association had asked all 1,300 members spread across the State to exercise their democratic right. “This is the first time we have cast our votes under the ‘others’ category. Earlier, we were casting votes in either the male or female category,” said secretary Madhuri Kinnar, who voted at the Saheed Nagar Primary School booth. Pratap Sahu, president, said the members voted enthusiastically.
The transgenders demanded the immediate setting up of a Hinjara Welfare Board and reservation for them in elections and jobs.
